I have spoken to the owner of BBFC regarding this, and he informs me that he has surveyed his customers on this matter in the past. Apparently the vast majority do not want subtitles. An alternative would be to teach the actors to stumble trough a few words in what is, for them, a foreign language, which inevitably comes across as false.
