The answers to your questions are Yes and Yes. Speculation about Tab Hunter’s sexuality started in the 1950’s, and it was was widely known that he was gay by the 1980s when he began working with directors like John Waters and, of course, Devine. However, he did not officially confirm he was gay until he released his autobiography “Tab Hunter Confidential – the Making of a Movie Star” in 2005, in which he revealed relationships with Anthony Perkins among others.
I will have you know you addressing that comment to a man who thought The 1st Duke of Monmouth was a hottie!!
To be fair, Tab Hunter’s main “heart throb” days were a bit before my time, as I recall I became aware of him when he co -starred with Devine in “Polyester” and wondered who the handsome, if by then middle aged, blonde man was. Then I saw a Saturday afternoon showing of his first film “Saturday island” (also known as “Island of Desire”) where he was shipwrecked on a desert Island, with a somewhat older Linda Darnell, and not a heck of a lot of clothing between then. After that I developed a life time habit of developing crushes on people who were either unavailable, or had not existed in the same form for some 30 years!!!
