As a huge fan of Mark’s work, it was a massive disappointment when he turned to generative AI to produce his wonderful artworks. While the subject matter may be similar to what he’s always done, the fact is that AI images are built on theft and are environmentally devastating in ways other image creation methods simply aren’t. I still check back every once in a while in the hopes he’s gone back to his previous methods, and hope someday he will.
Manicorn, Sorry you have been disappointed. Just to set the record straight, I don’t use generative AI and I wouldn’t know how to use it. I do use a couple of programs that alter photos to resemble painted or cartoon images which is likely some form of AI based technology and what you are seeing in my work. I have however been using these programs for quite some time so there would be no need to return to my previous methods as I have never quit using them. I do understand your concerns about AI and I share some of them, however I fear like all disruptive new technology, whether we like it and use it or not, its here to stay. Thank you for your kind words about my work and I hope this explanation might allow you to continue to enjoy it.
Oh! First of all, that’s wonderful to hear and thank you for your reply! I do have to admit some confusion though, because looking through your work a lot of it clearly does incorporate generative AI. Scrolling down a bit, “The SpankMaster’s Treasury” series leaps out at me as having all the hallmarks, plus the ‘Paying the Piper’ series which I see just got posted today. Your work didn’t used to look like that before the AI boom. If your programs do utilize that sort of AI image creation, I would urge you strongly to look into it and cease using them, or find other alternatives. Your work is SO creative and fun and I’ve always regarded it as a downright pillar of the community. But it hurts to look at now (trying to say that as inoffensively as possible, lol). The ideas and creativity are still there, but knowing the costs of AI images and how they’re used just saps that all away, unfortunately.
“AI is here to stay” is an argument I’ve also always been confused by, because there are MANY examples of technological fads that phased out as people got tired of them, realized the costs, or the markets simply shifted. Anyone remember NFTs? 3D movies? Not really sure why AI images wouldn’t fare the same given their general unpopularity. But I feel like that’s also an off-topic discussion for jockspank.
I’d love to discuss this further, and my email is open if you’d like to take it somewhere more private.
Sorry to add on another post, but I was browsing further and saw that on at least one occasion you’ve literally labeled your work as being “AI created”
Not that the confirmation was needed, since anyone with eyes could see what these are. But yeah, deeply confused why you would claim not to know how to make AI images when you clearly do. Is this the real Mark who replied, or is someone using his name for some reason?
In the post you refer to I did not label my work as AI created. That title refers to the original images I based mine on and yes they were no doubt created with AI. But as is stated in the introduction the source material was all men spanking women and women spanking men. Since that’s not the focus of my work or of JockSpank I simply took the images of male spankers, removed the females they were spanking and replaced them with men. I also bared the spankees butts since in the source material they were clothed. All of this was accomplished with photoshop which is the main program I use. So yes the source material was likely AI but my versions were not created using it. That is basically how I have always created the images posted here, the ones that you like and the ones you don’t, a bit from one source, a bit from another manipulated and altered in photoshop. So I stand by my original statement… I don’t use generative AI. That doesn’t mean that some of the source material I use is not created using it.
Would you all happen to know what video this clip is from?
